I think my simplest overall problem with TUA season 4 (i have multiple) is the fact that it feels like a first draft. there's plotholes, unanswered questions, unnecessary parts and confusing relationships that don't really make sense. but first drafts get edited, season 4 of the umbrella academy clearly was not.
the bare bones of the season are good (the train, the jennifer incident, the timelines leaking into one) but it was missing so many things that shouldve been edited or delved into, like a first draft.
it's honestly such a shame. i, like everyone else, had high hopes for the final season but quite frankly it sucked.

[image id: four screencaps from bbc ghosts, series one, episode three, 'happy death day' when pat tells alison tomorrow is his death day. the first screencap features a subtitle that's been altered to read, 'tomorrow's bbc ghosts final series day.' the following three screencaps show alison initially looking happy, then progressively more sad. the subtitles for these screencaps have been changed to read 'oh! happy...bbc ghosts final series day'. /end id]

Somehow Kitty learns the phrase “ok boomer” and has a delightful time using it on everyone in the house. All the other ghosts get so offended, they ask Alison to intervene. Unfortunately, Kitty says this just proves how boomer-y they are
#she grows out of it eventually#captain: I don’t know why you’re calling me that! pat and Julian are the real baby boomers!#Kitty: no it means ur old and uninformed#captain: I’m not old!#Kitty: ok boomer 🙄#fanny likes to give her angry lectures after she says that to her but she doesn’t listen#Pat and Julian try to tolerate it/laugh along but they’re the ones who end up getting alison#Robin and Thomas are exempt bc they don’t get it and their reactions aren’t as funny as the others#bbc ghosts#bbc ghosts headcanon#kitty higham#alison cooper

finished reading "tell me I'm worthless," which was an interesting experience. I think there's something really good for you in your soul to be able to understand the genre conventions you're in and the kinds of structures and language and character that can be explored in these genres. I think about how people tend to -- with fiction about marginalisation and/or about people who are marginalised as a blanket whole, regardless of the story -- operate on a checklist of dos and donts, but mainly donts: don't ever tell us a deadname, don't ever use these "problematic" words to describe them/or have them describe themselves in this way, don't ever describe negative emotions or "problematic" emotions, don't let the characters have harmful traits (either towards themselves or others), don't hurt your characters at all actually, don't make your characters politically uncomfortable or "problematically" complicated in their political outlook and/or journey, don't make your characters be assholes ever, certainly don't traumatise your characters, and under no circumstance do you kill your characters!
which of course, this book does praaaactically every one of these things, thank goodness
#with the deadname Thing i am reminded of responses to the last of us part 2 and tbh also the latest doctor who specials#there's a kneejerk reaction as if writers/directors have outed someone's actual deadname or as if knowing that someone has#a deadname will invalidate them to a non-trans audience#lot of scar-tissue that aches around all of these points generally and horror has the ability to kick down the door on that and say#you do not have to read this story -- but this will be in this story. so if you are ready to approach these themes and these ideas#this is a safe structure -- the walls of a book or a screen or a play or an audio drama or wherever you are#my issues have very much been around social coding and not understanding what is and isnt allowed and an intense anxiety around#always saying the exact right thing at all times (not just in marginalised spaces but everywhere all the time)#(im doing it right now actually -- getting anxious about all this phrasing)#(this book is opening up pathways in my brain)#very much a meta piece as well -- it knows and acknowledges shirley jackson especially but ofc also angela carter and du maurier#and i did feel a smigeon of clive barker in there and then he was in the acknowledgements too#i have not read the last person listed so helen oyeyemi goes on the list#im reading books#alison rumfitt#tell me im worthless

Honestly, the ending of the last episode was strangely abrupt, especially after the emotion of episode 5, and doesn't really make sense as a final moment, but I'm hearing buzz about there actually being a Christmas special, so I guess that final moment is still to come.
Even so, this felt like the best series in years. I would put it up with series 1 and 2 in terms of quality, and I'm just so happy that this show gets to go out on a high. Roll on the Christmas special!
#ghosts#bbc ghosts#them there#six idiots#someone mentioned the dvd including a christmas special in one of the facebook groups I'm in#but since it hadn't been announced it seemed like maybe a mistake#episode 6 is great don't get me wrong#alison finally finding out about julian pushing her was amazing#and especially that scene in the kitchen with julian's non-apology <3#I also loved the captain getting to openly enjoy watching the sexy weatherman#but when it cut to credits I was like ??? that's your last moment for this show???#but no#there is one more episode#ghosts spoilers#reactions#mine#ghosts mine#them there mine

Alfred Burke strikes a husbandly pose as concerned neighbour Mr. Barnes in The Man Upstairs (1958)
#fave spotting#alfred burke#the man upstairs#1958#british cinema#public eye#character actors#the film is about Richard Attenborough as a tenant of a boarding house who has a breakdown and the reactions#of the other tenants (and authorities etc) to the situation. alas‚ of all the tenants‚ Alfie is the only one out of the house at the time#and returns (and thus enters the film) only at about the halfway point. this means that whilst the others have all had rather nice little#characterisations set up and been introduced to the viewer‚ Mr Barnes ends up having little personality beyond 'husband of Mrs Barnes'#Mrs B being one of the main supporting roles. needless to say Alfie attacks the role regardless and manages to bring out some subtle shades#of indignation at injustice (and even a hint of socialist conscience) to a fairly underwritten part. also of note‚ Mrs B is played by noted#Australian star Dorothy Alison‚ so Alf finds himself doing a modest little attempt at an aussie accent... I'll be honest i didn't even#notice the first few times he spoke‚ but it come out a little more when he's heated (a nice touch of realism actually)

the discourse about this on ask a manager is so funny to me, esp bc honestly “mama” is just sort of a filler word to describe a female person amongst some latin-american people. it doesn’t actually mean mom/mother specifically.
#the word you would be looking for there would be mamá#the accent DOES make a difference#if you hear an older hispanic woman (or man but honestly i mostly see this in a woman to woman convo) call you mama it won't sound the same#as when they refer to a mother in spanish#it's like the difference between papa#which can either be pope (el papa) or the potato (la papa)#vs papá#which is 'dad'#some commenter was like 'oh well i bet people only use 'mama' and not papa' so it's sexist#sounds like someone who hasn't heard everyone from their dog to their male baby cousins called 'papacito' regularly#like i guess having a knee jerk reaction to hearing mama like that when you have issuse around fertility or something make sense but like#culturally that's just not what it means!!! it's not implying someone sees you as motherly or that you should be or anything#it's like an older woman calling you sweetie or hon but honestly i find it even less of an endearment it's just like#as alison said -- a term of respect#like i go into a butcher shop and the butcher says 'what can i do for you mama'....#it's culturally very homey to me lmfao i genuinely like it better than#linda or chula
